How this register is compiled

The source

Everything here comes from the Charity Commission for England and Wales's public register extract, published daily under the Open Government Licence v3.0. This copy was taken on 27 September 2026. Charities in Scotland (OSCR) and Northern Ireland (CCNI) are regulated separately and are not included.

What is counted

Main registered charities: 171,886. Linked charities (subsidiary charities registered under a parent's number) are not counted separately. Income and spending are each charity's latest reported figures, so the financial years differ from charity to charity.

"Behind with their accounts" means the Commission's reporting status is "Submission Overdue" or "Submission Double Default". We use the Commission's own status, as it stands on the day of the extract, and do not second-guess it.

Council areas are the local authorities each charity names as an area of operation. A charity can name several, and national charities often name none, so a charity is counted in every area it names. "Works only here" means it names that one area and no region or country.

What is left out

Individual pages exist for the 9,321 charities with a latest income of £1.0m or more. Every other charity is still counted, listed on its council area pages, and included in the downloads, with a link to its entry on the Commission's register. We do not republish trustees' names, email addresses or telephone numbers.

Corrections

If a figure here is wrong, it is wrong on the register too: we do not edit the data. A charity can correct its record through the Charity Commission, and the change will appear here after the next daily update.
