9,327 charities are behind with their accounts

6,380 are in default for two years or more, the Charity Commission's "double default". Another 2,947 are overdue. The 1,000 largest below last reported a combined £658.3m of income.

Every CIO, and every other registered charity with income over £25,000, must file its annual accounts with the Charity Commission within ten months of its year end, and every charity over £10,000 an annual return. A charity in default has missed that deadline. It is not a finding of wrongdoing: some are winding down, some have simply stopped. It does mean the public cannot see how their money was spent.
